Comments: Emily Blackman (Nee: Danielson) | Montrose PA United States | 1835-1850 | Comments: I have positively identified this portrait, with the help of the curator of costume and textiles at the WI State Historical Society. The style of dress is dated as 1847-1850. There is a companion portrait of a man. The most logical couple on my mother's side of the family is Emily Danielson Blackman and husband Josiah Blackman. This portrait was handed down through my mother's family, on the Blakely side. In her first years, my mother was raised by her grandparents, Josiah Blackman Blakely and Isabella Campbell Blakely. My mother, born in 1916, remembers the portraits on the walls of Josiah and Isabella's home in Neenah WI. Mother lived with them until about 1921. These are wonderful chalk renderings. They are in huge frames, in the custody of my brother. We have taken them out of the frames and looked with magnifying glass. There is no indication of who the subjects are, where these portraits were created or who the artist was.
UPDATE: A researcher for Emily Blackman, daughter of woman in portrait, sent me the codicil of Emily's will, where she specifically wills the large portraits to her nephew, Josiah Blackman Blakely, the person whose home had the portraits hanging, when my mom was a child. There is no longer any question as to the portrait subject. Futhermore, the local Preservation Society has purchased the Blackman home and renovating it to become a museum. These portraits will one day hang in the home of the subjects, once more.
