Comments: Mary Elizabeth Penniman (Nee: Brewer) | Boston MA United States | 1851-1900 | Comments: I have an old studio photograph of Mrs. George PENNIMAN (believed to be Mary Elizabeth BREWER) and Gardner which was taken at the Rockwood & Co. Studio in New York City, NY in the 1860's. Mrs. PENNIMAN appears to be in her 20's and Gardner is likely less than one year old at the time the photograph was taken.
Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding Mary and Gardner:
Mary Elizabeth BREWER was b. 29 Feb 1832 in Boston, MA to parents Jonathan Gardner BREWER (1806-1874) and Mary WELD (1804-1888) who were married 1 Apr 1831 in Roxbury, MA. Mary had three siblings, Caroline Abigale or Abigail BREWER (1833-1897); Ellen BREWER AMORY (1836-1873) and Gardner BREWER Jr. (1841 or 1842-1857).
Mary was married to George Henry PENNIMAN (1830-1909) on 26 Oct 1853 in Boston, MA and they had 6 children including Mary “Minnie” Brewer; Effie; Cordelia Louisa or Brewer; Gardner Brewer; George Henry Jr.; and Pauline Elizabeth or Emma PENNIMAN, all born between 1857 and 1869. Mary died 24 Jan 1897 in Manhattan, NY and is buried in the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA.
Gardner Brewer PENNIMAN was b. 5 Sept 1864 in New York to the parents identified above. Gardner married Mary J. JOHNSTONE (1871-1950) on 3 Aug 1893 in Belle Isle, SC. The couple had two children including Mary Johnstone PENNIMAN (1899-1948) and Olive Fitch PENNIMAN (1906-1993). Gardner died in 1943 in Dublin, Ireland and is buried in Inishlounaght, Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland.
