Comments: Thomas Jefferson Nettles (Nee: Belcher) | Richmond VA Va | 1901-1920 | Comments: Rev Thomas Jefferson Nettles and Mollie E Belcher. In 1889 Thomas was called to be pastor of the Salem Baptist Church and served until 1904. He did good work and was held in high esteem by the congregation. Mr Nettles was born Jun 15, 1849. He was converted at the age of 17 at Bethel Baptist church in York Co VA and said that he felt the call to the ministry at that time. He enrolled at Richmond College as a ministerial student.He was ordained at the Clay Street Baptist Church in Richmond,at the age of 28. He served several churches in Chesterfield Co prior to the beginning of his pastorate at Salem Baptist in 1889. During his pastorate at Salem, the church was painted and papered and a new flue was built. The centennial of Salem church was observed during his pastorate, and the Middle District Association met with the church as a part of the celebration. New hymn books were purchased to replace the Gospel Hymnal. Ice cream parties were held on the church lawn to raise money for building repairs. He married Miss Mollie E Belcher, of Chesterfield, in 1884. It is said that he was genteel in his manner. He was strong in his convection's and earnest in his work.
