He enlisted in the Michigan 14th Infantry on December 23, 1861 as a corporal and served during the Civil War until he was honorably discharged on July 18, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. Charles married Johanna Amalia Juliana Bruegel or Pruegel on August 20, 1865 in Richville, Tuscola County, Michigan. They had at least 15 children. He died on July 23, 1915 in Richville, Tuscola County, Michigan.
