Comments: Alexander W. Livingstone (Nee: ) | Columbus OH United States | 1851-1900 | Comments: This portrait of Mr. Alexander W. Livingstone (1822-1898) appears on page 28 of The Canadian Horticulturist, vol.XXII, no.1, January 1899. There is a biographical sketch of him on pages 28-29 of that volume. See that reference for more information. In the biographical sketch his family name is actually given as both "Livingston" and "Livingstone" --most of the time it is spelled as "Livingstone."
He was born in 1822 and was of Scotch-Irish extraction. His early years were spent on a pioneer farm in central Ohio. In 1856 he began a small seed business and then in 1877 he moved to Columbus, Ohio to obtain better business facilities. In 1880 he left his sons in charge of the Columbus business and moved to Des Moines, Iowa and established another seed business. In 1890 he returned to Columbus (having transferred the Des Moines business to one of his sons). He was very involved in horticulture and reportedly developed the "Beauty" and "Favorite" tomato varieties. He was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church. Mr. Livingstone died on 10 November 1898 at his home in Columbus, Ohio. That is all the information I have on him.
