He came to nearby Geneva, NY at a young age and spent most of his life there. He took up a business career in the iron industry and accumulated a large fortune. He became one of the largest real estate holders in Geneva. He married three times. His first wife was Miss Crawford, Miss Crawford's sister became his second wife (2 daughters). His third wife was Mary F. Platt of Long Island. J. M. Soverhill died in Geneva on 24 March 1885.
