Robert Burnet appears on the illustration page facing page 4 of The Canadian Horticulturist, vol.XII, no.1, Jan. 1889. There is a biographical sketch of him on pages 4-5 of that volume. His father was named James Burnet and his progenitors for five generations were natives of Ladykirk, Berwickshire, Scotland. The family's roots were in millnery in Neustead Mill, and afterwards in Tweed Mill. His mother was Elizabeth Blair, daughter of David Blair. Robert Burnet was licensed to preach and ordained by the Presbyter of Fordown and immediately afterwards volunteered as a missionary in Upper Canada, as Ontario was then called. For 26 years he was minister of St. Andrew's Church in Hamilton. He also became very involved in horticulture. In 1869 he was elected president of the Fruit Growers' Association of Ontario. In 1880 he removed to Pictou, Nova Scotia for 4 years then returned to Ontario.
