Comments: A. T. Evans (Nee: ) | | 1851-1900 | Comments: ** PLEASE NOTE: Photograph was copied from eBay and I do not have the original, nor any additional information. All identifying information or genealogical information in the comment field was provided on eBay with the photograph listing. However, in some cases I may have done a little research on the name also and added it to the comment field as, "NOTE:", to help a researcher for the photograph. ** TINTYPE of "CAPTAIN A.T. EVANS lost Sept 8th 1869 (Saxby Gale)" ... The person who wrote this later - on paper attached to back - may just have the date wrong. From the internet:THE SAXBY GALE On the night of October 4th and 5th, 1869 occurred the Saxby Gale, to leave a legend that still provokes our wonder. It swept up the Bay of Fundy smashing wharves, tossing vessels ashore, and creating tides that may have set an all-time world record. An account of it appeared in the AMHERST GAZETTE, three days later, which said that: "the tide must have been eight feet above the ordinary high-water level and four feet above the dykes." . There were two McVicar Brothers, Peter & George along with others, maybe 11 or 13 men who died in the storm in a barquentine named the Genii (3-masted, square-rigged sailing vessle) that left the St.Andrews area going to Saint John. The ship sank at Lepreau. ... NOTE: The above information was only one account of many from this gale and others, and may not pertain to the same events or locations for Captain Evans death.
