Max Frederick Bishop, the second baseman for Connie Mac’s last three pennant winners and one of the greatest leadoff batters of all time, died in his sleep at the home of a cousin in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, February 24, 1962 at the age of 62. Death is believed to have been caused by a heart attack. Bishop, who resided in Baltimore, had returned to the town of his birth to attend funeral services for his mother, Mrs. Lulu Bishop, 93, who had died on February 22, 1962. She was buried several hours after her son’s death. The gentlemenly and reserved former star had planned to retire as baseball coach of the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, a post he had held for 24 years, on March 1. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Baltimore following services at the Ellsworth Armacost Funeral Chapel”
