Comments: Ben. Perley Poore (Nee: ) | Newburyport MA United States | 1851-1900 | Comments: This portrait of Mr. Ben Perley Poore appears on page 423 of Rural New Yorker, vol.XLIV, no.1847, 20 June 1885. There is a biographical sketch of him on that page. See that reference for more information. Mr. Poore was born 2 November 1820 and grew up on the Indian Hill Farm near Newburyport, Massachusetts, which had been handed down in that family for six generations. Mr. Poore became a journalist and in 1847, after returning from five years in Europe he became a Washington correspondent. He was also involved in the United States Agricultural Society and for a time served as its secretary. He was also well known for the cattle he kept and for being a lover of antiques. That is all the information I have on him.
