Comments: Parker Earle (Nee: ) | Cobden IL United States | 1851-1900 | Comments: This portrait of Mr. Parker Earle appears on page 21 of Rural New Yorker, vol.XLIV, no.1824, 10 January 1885. There is a biographical sketch of him on page 22 of that volume. See that reference for more information. Mr. Earle was a prominent commercial horticulturist and president of the Mississippi Valley Horticultural Society. He was born in Mt. Holly, Vermont. He was trained in farming as a youth in Vermont. He attended Troy Conference Academy in Poultney, Vermont. In 1851 he moved west and did some work as a teacher. In 1855 he married and began life as a prairie farmer in Northern Illinois. In 1861 he moved to Cobden, Illinois (where he lived as of 1885). He became very involved in fruit growing. He and his sons had a farm of pears and small fruits consisting of approximately 250 acres. He was also president of the Southern Illinois Fruit Growers' Association and was twice president of the Illinois State Horticultural Society. That is all the information I have on him.
