Jeremiah Hartnett was a pupil of the Irish Presentation Brothers, and as a boy was a member of Fianna Fireann. Before he approached manhood, he joined E Company, Second Battalion, First Cork Brigade, Irish Republican Army and participated in most of the major engagements against the enemy. As a prisoner of war, he was interned in Cork Jail, Spike Island and Newbridge Camp where he endured the torture of the hunger strike.
