Monroe, Geneva, New York, 1912. See that title for more information. William Smith was born near Canterbury, Kent County, England, 2 September 1818. He came to the United States about 1842 with his brothers Edward (who had been in America before) and John and their mother (widowed). William Smith began working in the nursery industry (horticulture). In 1846 he and his brothers started up their own nursery near Geneva, NY. Later he was one of the organizers of the Standard Optical Company. In his early eighties he constructed William Smith Astronomical Observatory near his residence. He also built the Smith Opera House in Geneva and in 1906 he established William Smith College for Women in Geneva in connection with Hobart College. He died 6 February 1912.
