Monroe, Geneva, New York, 1912. See that title for more information. John Williams Smith was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1822. His parents moved to Geneva, New York soon after that. His father's name was John Smith, who ran a book store in Geneva. John Williams Smith's brother's name was Solomon E. Smith. In 1847 J. W. Smith opened a dry goods store in Geneva. In 1857 he married Martha Isabelle Gilbert of Massachusetts. She died in 1895. They had one daughter, Elizabeth Troup Smith. J. W. Smith died in Geneva on December 12, 1878.
