Comments: Gowan (Nee: ) | Canada | 1851-1900 | Comments: This portrait of Mrs. Jessie Gowan appears on page 4 of The Canadian Horticulturist, vol.XIV, no.1, 1891. There is a biographical sketch of her on pages 3-5 of that volume. She was born sometime in the early-mid 1800s. She reports that her grandmother was an eloping, disinherited lady of high birth. She also reports that her mother married a landscape painter. She also says her six brothers were artists of note in Edinburgh, Scotland. Four of them were sculptors, two were painters and one, Alexander A. Ritchie designed stained glass windows. Her brother John died of yellow fever in the West Indies. She may have gone by the nickname ''Dotty.'' She married Mr. John Gowan, who was a bookkeeper to Messrs. Cowan & Co., paper makers in Edinburgh. She moved to the United States with her husband sometime before the civil war. When the civil war broke out husband John went to the south to fight with his regiment. He died in 1862. She worked in a Christian mission for 12 years and later moved to the far west to be with her married daughter. Later she moved to Montreal, Canada. Her grandson's name was Gowan Johnston of Idaho. She wrote poems under the name ''Grandma Gowan'' which appeared in The Canadian Horticulturist.
