He was the second son of William Leslie and Catherine. He was born in the Parish of Rogart, Sutherlandshire, Scotland in 1804. In 1825 he moved to Canada with his parents and siblings. In 1837 he located permanently in Toronto. He was involved in Horticulture and the Botanical Gardens of Toronto. He had two daughters and two sons.
