Comments: Thomas Nuttall (Nee: ) | United States | 1851-1900 | Comments: This portrait of Mr. Thomas Nuttall appears as frontispiece illustration to The Gardener's Monthly, vol.II, no.1, January, 1860. There is a biographical sketch of him on pages 21-23 of that volume. See that reference for more details.
Mr. Thomas Nuttall was born at Settle, in Yorkshire, England in 1784. He received a rudimentary education and was apprenticed to a printer. Later, at the age of 22 he immigrated to the United States and began a business in Philadelphia, PA. He had a great interest in natural history and botany. From 1808 forward he increased his knowledge of botanical science greatly. He conducted many plant gathering expeditions into the American wilderness and also had a fondness for American Indians. In 1818 he published ''Genera of North American Plants.'' In 1822 he was appointed Professor of Natural History at Cambridge, Massachusetts. He published other works in botany and also in ornithology. In 1833 he returned to Philadelphia. In 1842 he returned to England on account of the death of his uncle, who had bequeathed him property. He retired to a small estate in Rainhill in England and devoted his time to horticulture and floriculture. He died at age 75. That is all the information I have on him.
