His parents were William Samuel and Martha Maria Chamberlain Sunman Tidnam. He married Mary Charlotte Alford in 1880 in Southampton, England. They had three daughters, Helen Alice, Florence Harriet, and Lillian Mary. After corresponding with Thomas Edison, F.H. brought his family to the United States in order to work with Edison. This was in 1888. He was an Edison Pioneer.
