Comments: James Major Gates (Nee: ) | Chicago IL United States | 1941-1960 | Comments: James M. Gates, Jr. was born July 17, 1935 and died March 20, 2004. Jim entered the military at age 15, trained at Ft. Leonard Wood and became part of the 95th Engineers Combat Battalion. He fought in Korea. In 1954, was sent to Nevada where he became an "atomic guinea pig," undergoing the infamous atomic testing in Camp Desert Rock with his segregated unit (which were put closest to the bombs). Jim testified in documentary films about the "hell on earth" he experienced. At 69, he died from the toll of radiation poisoning. He was a hero.
