He was an early member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. He was involved in many of the early church endeavors including Zion's Camp and was with the original party with Brigham Young in 1847. He also helped settle various settlements in the Utah area. Salem Utah was named in honor of him as Salem, MA was his birthplace. He married my 2nd great aunt Charlotte Alvord. He was also the husband of Sarah Wells Hartley He died in 1898 in Salem Utah.
