Milford Schindel knew John Brown, and he witnessed the invasion of Virginia in 1861 by the Federal 90-Day men. In 1863 he was a detached courier in the Army of Northern Virginia, Confederate States of America. In 1864 he served in the cavalry fighting against General Sherman's Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley. He participated in the burning of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
After the Civil War, Milford Schindel ran guns from San Antonio, Texas to the Republican forces of Juarez in Chihuahua, Mexico fighting against Maxmillian. Schindel became the aide-de-camp to General Ortega. He held the rank of colonel in 1867 and was at Queretaro, Mexico when Maxmillian was executed.
Milfrod Schindel returned to Texas and was foreman of an outfit of Vaqueros on the Rancho Santa Gertrudes of Captain R. King.
Becoming ill in 1869, he returned to Maryland. Upon recouping he went to Kentucky, returning to Maryland in 1876. He then became manager and chemist for Huyett & Schindel's Commercial Fertilizer Mills. Later he turned to farming.
He invented the first corn husking machine. The machine used snapping and cleaning rolls. In 1888 he organized a company in Hagerstown to weave silk fabrics. Milford and Robert Crawford, in 1891, organized what was to become the Pope Manufacturing Company of Hagerstown, a builder of bicycles. Two of his 17 patented inventions were the punctureless double bicycle pneumatic tube and the self-healing, singe-tube tire.
The Pope Manufacturying Company was owned by Albert Pope. It built bicycles and, later, automobiles. At one time, it was the largest bicycle factory in America. Its electric cars were built until 1910. One of its employees, Hiram Maxim, was one of the inventors of the internal combustion engine in 1895. It exported to many foreign countries.
