Vest, son of Robert and Annie Marcussen Vest, a Corporal in the United States Army during WWII attached to a construction battalion, was in the Second Wave during the invasion of Okinawa, known as Operation Iceberg. It began on Easter Sunday, April 1st, 1944. It was the greatest combined land, air, and sea operation in history, and the bloodiest island fight of the Pacific war. Over 200,000 people died, and there were more American casualties than D-Day, almost 50,000.
