Comments: Joseph Andrew Shires (Nee: ) | Tyrone PA United States | 1901-1920 | Comments: Joseph A. Shires (1897 – 1951) was the son of Ulysses Grant Shires and Alberta L. Naylor. He was a member of Sheridan Troop (cavalry), based in Tyrone, of the Pennsylvania National Guard and participated in the expeditionary force to the Mexican Border in 1916. During World War1 he was a Sergeant in the 103rd Trench Mortar Battery in the 28th Division. On the opening day of the Argonne offensive, Sept. 26, 1918, while operating a mortar sighting device he received a grazing scalp wound when a German shell exploded in or near the trench killing and wounding several members of his battery. He remained in action for the remainder of the war.
