Fortescue. Civil War. Residence was not listed; Enlisted on 7/1/1861 as a 1st Lieutenant. On 7/1/1861 he was commissioned into "A" Co. PA 29th Infantry He was discharged for by order War Dept on 3/12/1865 (Discharged from Signal Service) HAS A GREAT WRITE-UP IN THE SIGNAL CORP BOOK. "CAPTURED BY J.E.B. STUART NEAR GETTYSBURG ON JULY 5,1863". POW AND EXCHANGED MARCH 1,1865 NEAR WILMINGTON, N.C. *** (NOTE: Quick check on Ancestry.com shows this man remained in Philadelphia, PA. Per Widows Pension wife was, "Mildred A. E. Fortescue." He was born about 1840, PA, and died about 1915 or 1918 (difficult to read.) In 1890 his profession is shown as "insurance" and working for the City of Philadelphia. Per 1860 Philadelphia census (Lewis Fortescue, age 21) father's name, Joseph L. Fortescue, mother, Anna.
