Dee died Aug 1,1943 in a disastrous air raid on the german oil refineries at Ploesti in Rumania. In The Book Ploesti ( Bantam 1963) by James Dugan and Carroll Stewart they write that S/Sgt Havens was the *first American to die by enemy hand in the great ground-air battle * He was the rear gunner in the Jeresy Bounce B-24 Liberator Bomber #42-40609, 330th Bomb Squadron/93rd BG(H),Piloted by Worthy Long. Out of 10 crewman six were KIA and 4 were POWs. Dee was never Married. His remains were returned for Stateside interment in 1950 at Hale Center TX
