Comments: Josiah Blackman (Nee: ) | Montrose PA United States | 1851-1900 | Comments: I have definitely succeeded in identifying this portrait, and a female companion portrait, with the assistance of the curator of costume and textiles of the WI State Historical Society. These portraits were handed down through my Blakely line. In her first years, my mother was raised by her grandparents, Josiah Blackman Blakely, and Isabella Campbell Blakely. My mother, born in 1916, remembers these portraits on the walls of Josiah and Isabella's home in Neenah, Winnebago Co, WI. Mother lived with them until about 1921. I now know the portraits to be Josiah's maternal grandparents. The original chalk renderings are in huge frames in the custody of my brother. We have taken them out of the frames and used a magnifying glass. There is no clue as to the artist, the subjects of the portraits, or where they were done. I am so grateful to Leslie Bellais of the WI State Historical Society for her gracious help. UPDATE The portraits will once again hang in the home of the subjects. The preservation society in Montrose PA has purchased the Blackman home and are renovating it, planning to make it into a museum. My brother is in the process of donating the portraits to the preservation society.
