Cabinet card photograph of Republic of Texas veteran, Colonel T. A. Gay Photographer M. L. Sanders
This Photo is from the DeShields Collection //James T. DeShields (1861-1948) was a collector of Texas manuscripts, books and photographs. DeShields was also a prolific writer and published many books and articles on Texas frontiersmen beginning with his Frontier Sketches (pub. 1883) and Cynthia Ann Parker (pub. 1886). He continued to publish more books such as Border Wars of Texas (1912), and longer works such as The Fergusons: Jim and Ma (1932), Tall Men with Long Rifles (1935), and They Sat in High Places (1940). Besides numerous books he also contributed many articles to the Fort Worth Gazette and other newspapers and magazines.
According to documents I have obtained from the Texas State Archives (and included with this photograph), Thomas A. Gay served in the Somervell Expedition of 1842 that was in retaliation for the three attacks by Mexican armies that year including General Vasquez & General Woll’s capture of San Antonio in the Spring and Fall. The expedition was commanded by Alexander Somervell and by the time the army captured Laredo on 8 December numbered 683 men. On 19 December, Somervell realized that the expedition would not succeed without the proper supplies and ordered his men to disband. About 308 men refused to do so and would continue to invade Mexico in the disastrous Mier Expedition
