Comments: Lincoln Clark Leftwich (Nee: ) | Lynchburg VA United States | 1851-1900 | Comments: Born to Augustine Leftwich, III (b. 03/04/1774) and Elizabeth Williams Clark. Enlisted in Capt. H.G. Latham's Battery of VA Artillery on February 27, 1861 as a 2nd Lt. Then served in Co. D, 38th Battalion VA Light Artillery. Later promoted to Major and served on the staff of Gen. Earl Van Dorn and was wounded at Shiloh. The 'Official Records' indicate that he was captured on board a Confederate ship later in the war. He displayed papers indicating he was a commissioned officer in the Confederate Navy(?). Once captured, he ended up on Morris Island in 1864 as one of the 'Immortal 600' used as a human shield for Federal artillery bombarding Charleston, SC. He married Miss. Sue J. Jackson on Jan. 25, 1866 in VA (by Rev. W.H. Wilhelm). He died on June 14, 1907. With the exception of the documents filed by his wife for widow’s benefits, all references to him indicate his name to be “L. Clark Leftwich.” I’m not sure if the use of the initial “L” began early on in his life or as a result of the prominence of Abraham Lincoln.
