Comments: George Washington Campbell (Nee: ) | Delaware OH United States | 1851-1900 | Comments: This picture of Mr. George Washington Campbell appears on page 813 of the Rural New Yorker, vol.LV, no.2446, 12 December 1896. There is a nice biographical description of him there. Please see that reference for more details. George was born in Cortlandville, Cortland County, NY, 12 January 1817. His father, David Campbell, was the editor and publisher of a weekly newspaper. In 1822 the family moved to Ohio. In 1849 George moved to Delaware, OH where he began in the mercantile business and also engaged in agriculture and horticulture. In 1857 he dropped the mercantile business and became interested in propagating and disseminating the Delaware Grape which had been thusly named by the famous A. J. Downing. Mr. Campbell was well regarded in horticultural circles and in 1875the Ohio State Board of Agriculture acknowledged his achievements. (For more biographical info see: The Cyclopedia of American Horticulture.) That is all the information I have on this picture. I am not researching this line, just saw the photo and thought I'd post it.
