Comments: John Joseph O'Reilly (Nee: ) | Dublin Ireland | | Comments: John J. O'Reilly (16 May 1896-9 Nov 1945) was the only son of Sarah Mahony (1860-1922) and John O'Reilly (1860-1900) and a sister of Mary Josephine O'Keeffe (1894-1970). His baptismal sponsors were Alfred Byrne and Annie Cranwell. Following his Mother's re-marriage in 1913 he left home and joined the merchant marine because he did not get along with his step father. He worked on the SS Finola sailing out of Dublin for Michael Murphy & Co and also for the Dublin & Le Havre Steam Company. His record of Military Service states that during the Anglo-Irish War he was a ''member of Q Co. of the Dublin IRA (cross Channel boats)''. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Free State Army in 1922. He was later promoted to acting Captain and served in that capacity to June 1929 when he tendered his resignation. His Officer's No was SDR/3505. According to his military record he was of slight build, 5 feet 7 inches in height, 9 and a half stone in weight, fair complexion with dark brown hair and blue eyes. Following the outbreak of WWII he joined the Irish Marine Service, the forerunner of the Irish Navy. He was serving as a Petty Officer when he died of an apparent heart attack at Haulbowline Naval Base, Cork in November 1945. After his funeral mass at Arbour Hill in Dublin he was buried with his parents in Glasnevin Cemetery.
